Upgrading my recording studio methods - What software, interface equipment should I use (limited budget)?

home budget software

I have been recording music from my home for six years, so I am not a n00b when it comes to recording, however, I have done all my recording on an analog machine (Boss BR-8). While it is an awesome machine, I am investing in a new laptop in the coming months, and I would like to go ahead and assimilate smoothly into the digital recording era. I have been looking at various programs, and hardware, such as Cakewalk, ProTools, Acid, and others. I have also been looking at the Lexicon Omega Desktop studio, as well as other USB interface boxes, for connectivity. I would really appreciate any help with this, I have a limited budget, but no software is really out of my reach, so just helping me with which software to go with. I make, well, my fans call it “epic dark metal”, a combo of speed/death/black/thrash/doom metal, classical, and I want to start making electronica. Thanks for your time.

I would say go with ProTools, as all the professionals use it. I myself have Reason and Cubase, I’m not sure I’d recommend Reason, wheras Cubase is great for recording.
Make sure you have a good sound card too.

Don’t ever touch USB interfaces. Since your getting a laptop, the Delta 1010 is out, which is a PCI interface that let’s you stream 8×8 multiple inputs and outputs. Try the Echo Audiofire 8, for 500 US, which is a firewire interface, and mann is it good. It even comes with two preamp line/mic inputs. Get it - if i had the money on me right now, i`d buy it for my studio. As for software, i’m currently in love with Adobe Audition 3. Sure it doesn’t support mutli-cards and all that other stuff, but frankly the sound quality is great and you can edit/mix/master like hell with it. =)
